Upcoming Field Work Volunteer Opportunities

5/28/25 - 6/30/25: Controlled Pollinations at Codorus State Park

Help with controlled pollinations at Codorus State Park to create the next generation of chestnut trees forwards to restoration! We will be at Armstrong's orchards in the Codorous State Park Campground on various dates from May 28th through June 30th, depending on the trees. No experience necessary, but you'll need to be physically able to work outdoors with medium-duty equipment, such as pruner poles and shepherd's hooks. Onsite training provided by Regional Science Coordinator, Lake. Email lake.graboski@tacf.org or call 814-577-1587 to get on the list if you are interested. We will be in touch on exact dates as the season unfolds.

6/5/25 - 6/25/25: Spying on Chestnuts at TNC West Branch Orchard

Volunteers are needed to spy on chestnuts in the TNC West Branch orchard in remote Sproul State Forest near Hyner, PA to know when they are going to producing pollen. We needed eyes on the chestnuts from 6/5/2025 through 6/25/2025. The orchard is roughly located at West Branch Preserve, Ritchie Road, Lock Haven, PA at 41.32422374173459, -77.57500124029099 (exact location shared upon accepting the task). Volunteers will report back to Noah Vincent, at nev5073@psu.edu as often as possible, ideally once every 3 days, during this time window.

6/25/25 10:00am: Pollination Potluck at Graboski's

From Lake: I will be hosting a pollination training at 124 Old Tyrone Pike, Philipsburg, PA on Saturday June 21st starting at 10am. We will be using my Chinese trees to practice controlled pollination activities. This will also be a potluck! so y'all are encouraged to bring a dish. We'll have some yard games set up if the weather cooperates, and you can observe my attempts at gardening. Contact lake at lake.graboski@tacf.org or 814-577-1587 to sign up.
