Fresh chestnuts at Harvest time…
I (Audrey) was chatting with my predecessor, Jean, recently, and she was telling me how beautiful she always found the new chestnuts, fresh from their burs. I couldn’t agree more. Show us a seed that has more character than this! There is a reason “chestnut brown” is a common descriptive, for it is a rich, decadent brown. The sweet little hairs, not unlike the downy lanugo sometimes seen on newborns, remind us that we are beholding something precious, something that needs our protection.
It is easy to get carried away photographing these new wonders… I hope you’ll enjoy this nutty little photo session taken during our last shucking day of the season. (Click on an image to see all its detail.)
We had several terrific volunteers helping out with shucking. Steve, shown above, happened to be there when I stopped by. Thank you to Steve and all of our volunteers who braved the burs with us!
